It's early November at Harugaizumi International School. Last week, the whole school put on a cultural festival, with the School Idol Club having a performance in the gym. You got a pretty decent turnout, but that's no reason to rest on your laurels; practice and school both continue this week! Have fun, check out the setting, and keep your ears open. You never know what opportunities will pop up for you!
[Carmel is scrolling through B♡nd before practice officially starts, reading up on coverage of other idol groups. There's a sketchbook open on the table filled with notes mixed with potential costume designs. The writing is about half English and half Japanese, though, so have fun with that!
During practice, Carmel is her usual peppy self. Lots of English encouragement today! But more importantly:]
Hey, do you want to come with me to the recycle shop after this? I was thinking we might be able to find something cute for our next costumes.
[B♡nd this week is full of coverage of last week's cultural festivals at various schools. The front-page story is Sanayume, as apparently, D.A. Academy put on a clinic this year (did their school actually allow pyrotechnics on the grounds?), but there are some features on smaller schools closer to home -- including yours!
The Harugaizumi School Idol Club feature has this to say:
And in case you were in the neighbourhood after checking out the schools in Hikarizaka, up the mountain is the former home of KiSeKi! Harugaizumi International School has been off the radar for years, but this year had an impressive crowd for the small-town school. Most of that can be chalked up to its special effects, with light columns and displays that it's hard to believe were built by the students, and the girls' new songs are still as catchy as ever. They're still rough around the edges -- I caught a few slip-ups in the choreography and one of the girls doesn't quite know how to smile on stage yet -- but the crowd looked impressed. Keep an eye on these ones!
The link of the day is a video of the cultural festival performance of Powerful Garage, an idol duo with a rock-type image from right over in Hikarizaka. They... sound like they're working out some frustration, don't they? Maybe schoolwork's getting to them.]
[ And in comes Ryoko, not really bothering to announce herself as usual, before she makes a beeline for Carmel so she can nose over her shoulder like a rudegirl. ]
[ Ryoko's brow knits together in a little frown. ]
That's a bit of a mixed bag. It's good that we're getting noticed at all, but I really don't want us to be known as just the special effects idols... I think we really need to buckle down and start pushing ourselves to really polish our act.
It's pretty good for a first review. The last time we tried to not be KiSeKi, the whole review was just mad we weren't immediately as good as them. [Carmel shrugs, turning off her phone.] That's why we disbanded.
[Carmel immediately brightens, even if it's a little brittle around the edges.]
My sister says our songs are really good, by the way! I sent her a clip of our performance at the cultural festival and she told me that she believes in us.
[Her sister is an American pop star who goes by IZ. She won an X-Factor type show right before Carmel's family moved to Japan for work reasons.]
[ Ryoko's expression lightens just a bit. Sure, there's an element of Carmel's sister probably not wanting to totally trash her work, but... knowing Carmel as she does, Ryoko doesn't think any relative of Carmel's would sugarcoat her words if she thought the group was completely hopeless. ]
That's reassuring to hear... she's already had a debut of sorts, hasn't she? So she probably has a good idea of what our level of quality is.
[Carmel nods. Mostly because it's Ryoko, who might be able to benefit from this in a way the other girls won't, she says:]
Izzy said the hardest part of performing in a group was always remembering that you have to trust other people.
[That's never been a problem for her, because her family is big and they just taught her to believe the best in people. She knows it can be hard, though, and her job as a third year is to make sure that everyone can do that.]
You have to believe that they'll do their part and that's scary, because it's not really something you can control.
[ Ryoko doesn't necessarily look offended, but the way her eyebrows shoot up and then settle back down as her eyes narrow a touch make it clear that she at least considered it. After a moment, though, she just gives a sigh that sounds suspiciously like admitting defeat. ]
I can at least believe nobody wants to make a fool out of themselves on stage. And it's not as though anyone's been slacking that much on practice...

What do they have to say about us?

They were really impressed with our special effects, but we still need some work, basically. So kind of what Prez told us.

This is a step up from that then, at least. We'll just have to make sure they don't have any choice but taking us seriously this time.

Good meowning! Hey, are you still thinking about what the president was talking about? I don't know what she's thinking sometimes.
[You can also find her at lunch, trying to hand out newspapers at the cafeteria door.]
Read all about it! Last week's cultural festival a resounding success! At least if you aren't the Manga Club, I guess...
[And at practice, she's tapping on the piano experimentally, audio recorder turned on beside it.]
We could use a new song, right? I mean, Carmel-senpai was talking about getting us out to perform some more.
